Heart of a Character

Last night I wrote one of the final chapters of the novel I am currently writing, Heir to Koloso, the second novel in the Rise of the Temple Gods series.  The scene in question was one I had actively avoided writing for a long time, despite fully knowing exactly how the scene was going to take place.  I knew that in order to do justice by the story I am writing, the scene had to be written.  I cried as I wrote the last paragraph and when I was done, I left the scene with a profound sense of guilt and sadness.

I pride myself on creating independent characters who have their own interests, backstories, and personalities.  Long before a story is completed, and occasionally from their first conception, my characters take on a life of their own.  In fact, I often feel that I am not so much writing a story as instead transcribing the one being whispered by the various characters who come to whisper their tales in my ear.

To some this idea that my characters are individuals who can be spoken to, argued with and bring tears to my eyes, might seem a strange description.  However, it is my belief and my experience that this is the case.  Characters can, and often are, as real to an author as the person standing in the room next to them.  It is because of this close and often complex relationship between myself and my protagonists, that makes the emotional scenes so difficult to write.

In order to write these scenes to the best of one’s ability, an author often attempts to force themselves both mentally and emotionally into the role of the character being written.  If I cannot feel the emotional impact that is dealt to the character, then I cannot reasonably expect my readers to be affected by their plight either.  Only by fully exposing myself to the same emotional journeys experienced by my protagonists can I understand how the character in question should react.  This is also, perhaps, one of the reasons why one of the most common pieces of writing advice offered to young writers by professionals is simply to “write what you know.”

To help myself enter these types of scenes, I often set a musical playlist.  Absolute silence generally finds me terribly unproductive when writing.  I tend to use different types of music in order to help create and support the emotional level of a given scene.  My family will often say that when I am listening to something upbeat, I am fun to be around.  However, when I am listening to a straight track of Celine Dion, the best thing to do is to hand me a glass of wine and slowly back away from the door.

Novel Debut

I am excited to announce the release of my second novel, Heir to Kale, the first book in the Rise of the Temple Gods fantasy series!

HeirtoKale-2 (2)

“Fear to the fearless. Hope to the hopeless. Mercy to those who hate you. Death to those who love you.” – Prophesy of the Kalian Twins

In the land of Kale there lies a delicate balance between the powerful Temples and the rulers from an ancient, royal bloodline. The Temples are ruled through combat, determined by a series of tournaments. Of these tournament champions, sixty are chosen to become Defendants, an elite team charged with protecting the realm from all enemies. Selection to this team is considered the highest of honours and leadership of the team is decided only once every thirteen years.

Princesses Mariana and Ameria, twin daughters of two such champions, are taken as children to separate, yet equally powerful Temples. Through years of rigorous training both are educated in the arts of combat, swordplay, and the ancient traditions of the Temple Gods. Both eventually obtain the rank of Kalian Champions with the expectation of one day serving upon the coveted Defendant Team.

Then, not long after their seventeenth birthday, the childless King declares that one of the sisters must succeed him as the future Queen. As the race for the throne begins, the sister’s long standing rivalry intensifies, leading both upon a dangerous path that threatens not only their lives, but the fate of the very kingdom.

Unbeknownst to the twins, this treacherous path to the throne is the elaborate collaboration of an ancient prophecy and two creatures charged by the Gods themselves ensure it comes to pass. As primeval powers awaken, the two sisters must struggle to learn the truth behind the prophesy and search for a way to change their inevitable fate.

Second Author Event & Trip Home

My second author event was held at Rusty Grape Vineyards on Oct. 30th of this year.  There was a great turnout, in large part due to the generosity of the vineyard owners, Jeremy and Heather, who provided a free pasta dinner to everyone who came out for the signing that night.  So a very special ‘thank you’ to them for allowing the event to be hosted at their beautiful vineyard and helping in making the event such a success.  Their continued support of local artists is always appreciated.

Also, a big thank you to everyone who came out to the event and for allowing me to share my creative work with you!

Like the first signing, I read a section from both my currently published novel, The Indoctrination, and a yet-to-be published piece titled Rise of the Temple Gods: Heir to Kale.  It is the first novel in a trilogy which will probably be released sometime early next year.  In addition to free dinner, guests also received free signed cards featuring an excerpt from the currently released novel.  I enjoyed both events and am looking forward to doing more in the future.

I am back in Dublin, though it took a full twenty hours of transit time.  I find myself both happy to be back, and sad to be back at the same time.  The entire experience, both the time spent Washington and the conference spent in New Orleans, was amazing.  I had waited a very long time to meet Anne Rice, and still think a part of me is among the clouds over the fact that I actually had the opportunity to converse with her.  I also made several new friends along the way.

Anyway, now I should probably take a deep breath, and get back to writing – both creatively and academically!

First Author Event

On Friday, I embarked on what would become a nearly 20 hour trip from Ireland to the West Coast of the United States for my very first author event.  Originally from Washington, I was very excited at the opportunity to hold my first event in what I consider to be my hometown, in spite of my constant change of address over the past few years.

The signing was held on Sunday.  There was a decent turnout, and the number of cars in the parking lot as I drove up to the event instantly quelled my fears of arriving all the way from Dublin to an empty room.  The signing itself was held at a local vineyard and those gathered were offered the opportunity to sample some local wines.  A special thank you is due to Andee & Cheryl for helping to both advertise and organize the event.

For those who attended, specially designed postcards were handed out and many were signed upon request.  The reading portion of the event lasted about 20 minutes.  Three pieces were read: 1. the prologue of The Indoctrination; 2. a chapter from the middle of the same novel; 3. the first chapter of a novel titled Black Rose, a yet-to-be published fantasy.

Despite a bit of nerves, the reading went well and the event as a whole was excellent.  I feel truly blessed to have had so many people come out for the event and that they permitted me take up a portion of their time to introduce them to the various worlds and characters that I have created over the years.  I also received some great questions from the audience and would like to take this moment to say “thank you” to everyone who attended!

I am now looking forward with great enthusiasm to my second event, which will be held on Oct. 30th at another local WA vineyard.  If you live in the area, please feel free to check out the details posted on my events page.   Til then, I am off to a conference in New Orleans!

Debut Novel

I am excited to announce the release of my debut novel, The Indoctrination, which became available on Amazon this week! It is a science-fiction novel which follows the story of a self-proclaimed villain.  The protagonist, Lady Dehartra-Kasar, is the Empress of a powerful, parasitic, and alien empire that has plagued countless planets, infesting various species which they come across.  This is the story of the Empress’ rise to power from an innocent girl to one of the most feared creatures within the Setian Empire.

Abducted as a child by the Setain Empire and raised in their dark and sometimes terrifying ways to become a full-fledged member of their militaristic society.  She will commit horrendous crimes, send thousands to their death, risk the lives of those she loves most; all in service to the Empire in which she has been raised.

Yet, even a villain can love, hurt, feel, and believe with all her soul that her actions are right.   Within the Empire this young girl will gain a father, a friend, a lover, and a soul mate.  It is within these relationships that lie the heart of this tale, enduring both triumph and tragedy, joy and sorrow, and a love most forbidden.

Growing up reading the works of authors such as Milton, Shakespeare, and Anne Rice, I have had a long love affair with the darker side of stories.  This novel delves into a dark realm, exploring what defines both a hero & villain and how, at times, the line between them can be blurred.  I am interested in exploring what, exactly, makes a hero a hero or a villain, a villain.  This particular story began long ago as a short story.  In that short-story, there appeared a villain, who quickly became more fascinating than the heroes who opposed them.   It was with this interest in mind that I began to write this debut novel.
